The Victoria University of Manchester College of Technology Christmas Terminal Examinations 1938 Session 1938-39 Textile Quantities and Fabric Structure 10 Questions Revers; 2 Blank pages Transcription: 10.000, P.B.S. 7/35 THE VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER (FACULTY OF TECHNOLOGY) COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY Christmas Terminal Examination, 1938, Session 1938-39 TEXTILE QUANTITIES AND FABRIC STRUCTURE (Textile Industries, 2nd Yr. Ordinary & 1st Yr.Hr.) Monday, 19th December, 1938. 9,30 a,m. to 12.30 p.m. Candidates are required to attempt not more than SEVEN questions four from section I, and three from section II. Separate answer books must to used for each section. Questions: Section I 1. Give the basis of counting for the following textile yarn systems:- cotton (English and Bump), linen, worsted, jute and denier silk (International Metric). Plotting counts against yards per pound how would you use a graph for converting from one count system to another? Convert 30s cotton counts into worsted and denier silk counts. 2. What are the objects of folding textile yams? Give examples of different types of folded yams and the uses for these folded yams. Calculate the resultant count and the weight of each component yam in 100 lbs. of a fancy yam. The yam is made by folding two threads of 245 cotton and two threads of 200 denier rayon. Forty-two inches of each cotton yarn and fifty-three inches of each rayon yam are used per yard of the folded yarn. 3. Make a sketch of a twine heald and a wire heald and point out the advantages of each type. A warp stands 42 inches wide in a 80s Stockport reed and dented three ends per dent. Calculate the counts of a sett of twine healds if the draft for the pattern is straight on 12 shafts. If wire healds were used for this warp find how many wire healds must be mounted on each shaft. 4. Calculate the weight of warp yarn in a sett of 12 back beams 420 ends 16,000 yards of 40s twist. If the average speed of the beaming machine is 200 yards per minute end the efficiency is 80% find the total time taken to run the yam on to the back beams. 5. What weight of warp and weft will be required to weave 120 pieces of a cotton and rayon cloth woven as follows?,:- Allowance Warp Weftfor extra Crimp Crlap selvedge" ends 36" 60 yards 72 x 90 5°s/150 danier 1/2" 4% 8% rayon Use your own estimates for losses due to waste. Eight looms are employed for weaving this cloth find the time taken to weave 120 pieces if the loom speed is 200 picks per minute, the weaving efficiency 85$. Calculate the weight per piece of each colour of warp and weft In the cloth sample supplied on a basis of 36" 90 yards. (Continue) (contd) Counts of the warp (all colours) 24s. Total extra selvedge Counts of the weft. Fawn 163 Light and 1 ends 48 (fawn warp) Dark Blue) * SBC tip n II State the different methods that are used for the omamentati of plain cloth. Show on design paper designs, drafts and liftir plans for warp and weft cord weaves and also a cord check patten What advantages are obtained by using the regular twill weave for woven cloth? Make the design draft and lifting plan for a regular cotton twill with the following common intersection Show with diagrams the effect of the direction of twist and the direction of twilling upon the appearance of twill fabrics. Make a design and draft for any type of fancy twill constructed from a regular twill basis by the arrangement of the drafting. Analyse the cloth sample for design, draft and lifting plan, ends and picks per inch and direction of twist in the yams, warping and checking pattern.
