Dennis Mills 2024 donation coverlet #11
Transcription notes:
Overshot Coverlet c. 1860
Possibly John Campbell of Komoka, Lobo Twsp., Middlesex County
This is another dramatic overshot coverlet woven with bright red wool on a bleached
white cotton warp. The piece is extremely well woven by an experienced professional
weaver. The two lengths have been very well matched at the centre seam – nearly
invisible! The coverlet illustrates quality in every detail.
Reference: Keep Me Warm One Night – Burnhams #328 & #329 ROM
The coverlet is such a close match to the ROM examples that the possible attribution is
made to John Campbell of Komoka, Lobo Township of Middlesex County near London,
Ontario. Without careful examination of the ROM examples, it cannot be confirmed.
The coverlet was purchased from a collector auction in Nappanee consigned by
previous owner in Prince Edward County – identity unknown to me. Many fine pieces of
weaving have travelled from their original locations through antique shows, shops and
auctions in recent years with an unfortunate loss of provenance.
The overlapping octagon draft pattern is not one commonly seen by me over the years.
Condition: Excellent with overcast red wool binding in handstitched “blocks” on the top
and bottom edges.
