(Textile Industries. 2nd Year Ordinary & 1st Year Higher)
Thursday, 15th December, 1938 2.0 to 4.0 p.m.
Candidates are required to attempt not more than FOUR questions.
QUESTIONS:
1. Make a sectional line sketch to show the passage of cotton through a hopper bale opener. How are the bales arranged and how is the cotton fed to the machine to obtain the best possible mixing?
2. Why is the pedal feed regulator usually placed near the end of an opener installation? Make a line sketch of the regulator drive, and calculations for the number of beats per inch of cotton fed when the cone strap is in its extreme and middle positions respectively. You may assume that the beater is two bladed end makes 700 r.p.m.
3. Explain the purpose of the following, used in connection with blowing room machines: - high speed, dust cages, dust settling chamber, bag filters, reserve boxes, two way distributor, by-pass valves, end dust trunks.
4. State the objects of the card. Make a sketch of the feed mechanism, taker-in, mote knives and undercasing, showing their relative positions. Describe briefly the action of the taker-in at the feed plate.
5. Define the term "bevel11 as applied to the flat of a card. Why is this bevel necessary and how is it obtained? Sketch a flat in its carding position over the cylinder, indicating the inclinations of the wires, the directions of movement of the flat and cylinder, the approximate speeds of the flat and cylinder, and the distance bet
