The long-established Zephyr Textile Plant in Almonte will be closing down permanently at the end of the year throwing 150 people out of work.
"It's a shock to the whole town and will really hit us hard," commented Stanley Condie, president of the local United Textile Workers of America union.
"They talk about the layoff at Inco in Sudbury, but with a population of only 3,000 in Almonte a layoff of 150, we have it just as bad as they do," he added.
The workers, 24 of whom were previously laid off, received word of the decision Wednesday. About 50 per cent are women.
Meetings with Canada Manpower officials will be held Friday to try to find jobs for the displaced workers.
"But it will be difficult, there are only a couple of small industries left here," said Condie.
Some workers will be given the chance to transfer to another of the company's plants in Ormstown, near Valleyfield, Que. But Condie said few are expected to make the move.
He blamed the layoff on falling sales due to competition from cheap offshore imports.
"The Trudeau government made a move a few weeks ago to protect the textile industry, but as usual it was too little too late," he said.
The Almonte company produces knitting and carpet yarns.
Condie said the Mill Store, attached to the mill, may be kept in operation but will probably be moved tc another location in the town.
Company president Philippe Bieler in a letter ti employees advised them to take any jobs they can fini between now Dec. 23, final date of the lay off.
