Early Guild Weaving
This attractive coverlet was a conundrum when I began to examine it closely. It was
purchased at an antique auction in Napanee about 2018. It uses a draft seen in the
Renfrew County area by a weaver William Inglis from the mid 19 th century. The name is
not known to me but I call it “double wheel”. The optical appeal is evident with the
radiating circles on both sides within diamonds. The use of the snowball motifs within
and around the table shows them to good effect as opposites.
The warp is dense cotton with multi ply red wool in the weft with quite long floats. The
result is a dense and heavy construction seen in late 19 th c examples.
However, in this case the coverlet has two seams of equal three-part widths @ 21”
each. This is unusual and suggests that it may have been woven on a narrow loom
typical of early 20 th c cottage and guild production – with excellent result. A weaving
revival took place in Quebec in the early 20 th c.
Condition: Excellent – almost as new.
