Overshot Coverlet c. 1840
Ref. Keep Me Warm One Night Burnhams
#237
Unidentified Weaver
Prince Edward County
“Queen’s Delight” pattern
This coverlet is a relatively early and rare find for the collection. I recall ?) that it was
found at a Potter Auction in Nappanee in the mid-1980s (While in Nappanee visiting
family: I had previously purchased [illegible] Samuel Fry coverlet in a similar pattern
from Lincoln County, Niagara. While located many kilometres apart they use an early
pattern perhaps related to early Loyalist immigrants to both Niagara and Prince Edward
Counties.
[illegible] coverlet is a simpler variation of Queen’s Delight variation in ROM #236 &
#237. The pattern is refined and [illegible could be ‘original’] with high contrast between
the blue wool weft and the natural white cotton warp.
It has an unusual centre seam with a displacement seen on the reverse. This preserves
the symmetry at the front. Was this a miscalculation by the weaver?
Condition: Very good – obvious age and use with little impact.
Source: Potter Auction, Nappanee from Prince Edward Co Collection, mid 1980s
Dimensions: 91” (231 cm) l x 64” (192 cm) w
An unusually large example perhaps commissioned for a large tall post bed of the early
19 th c.Collection
