Mortgage agreement from Alexander McLean to John Baird securing $3000. It is from MacDonell and Dowdall Barristers, Solicitors, &c., Almonte. Richard John Dowdall is the witness who signed the mortgage. Catherine McLean, wife of Alexander McLean also signed the mortgage.

MORTGAGE WITH DOWER - SHORT FORM. WM. TEMPLEMAN, Law and General Printer, Almonte.
This Indenture,
Made the fourth day of July one thousand eight hundred and eighty one, (in pursuance of the Act respecting Short Forms of Mortgages,)
Between Alexander McLean of the Town of Almonte in the County of Lanark and Province of Ontario, miller hereinafter called “the Mortgagor”, of the First Part, Catherine McLean the Wife of the said party of the First Part, made a party hereto for the purpose of barring her Dower merely, of the Second Part; and John Baird of the same place, woolen manufacturer hereinafter called “the Morgagee”, of the Third Part;
Witnesseth, that in consideration of three thousand dollars of lawful money of Canada, now paid by the said Mortgagee to the said Mortgagor, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, the said Mortgagor doth Grant and Mortgage unto the said Mortgagee his heirs and assigns forever,
All and Singular, those certain parcels or tracts of Land and Premises situate, lying and being in the Town of Almonte in the County of Lanark in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, Being Composed of all that part of Lot number Thirty four on Braw Street in the said Town of Almonte as laid down on Bell’s General Plan of the said Town registered in the Registry Office for the north Riding of the County of Lanark not heretofore conveyed by the said John Baird to one Henry Stafford. Also all that other certain parcel or tract of land and premises situate lying and being in the Town of Almonte aforesaid and Being composed of a part of Lot number Twenty six on John Street in the said Town of Almonte and which may be better known and described as follows that is to say commencing at a post planted at the North Easterly angle of the said Lot Twenty six where its Easterly boundary ceases in the boundary of Lot number Thirty four on Brae Street as shown on the aforesaid plan thence along the boundary between Lot number Twenty six on Farm Street and Lot number Thirty one on Brae Street forty four feet six inches to a post planted thence at right angles to the said boundary into Lot number Twenty six twelve feet

Thence in a northerly direction parallel to said boundary forty four feet six inches to the boundary between Lots thirty four and twenty six thence along said boundary twelve feet to the place of beginning containing five hundred and thirty feet be the same more or less
Provided, This Mortgage to be void on payment of Three thousand dollars of lawful money of Canada, with interest at six per cent. Per annum, as follows: Said principal sum of Three thousand dollars together with interest there on at the rate aforesaid to become due and payable in three months from the date hereof
Together with Interest at the rate aforesaid upon all arrears of Interest remaining unpaid after the maturing thereof - and Taxes and the performance of Statute Labor.
The said Mortgagor covenants with the said Mortgagee That the said Mortgagor will pay the Mortgage Money and Interest, and observe the above proviso; That the said Mortgagor hath a good title in fee simple to the said Lands; And That he hath the right to convey the said Lands to the said Mortgagee; And That on default, the said Mortgagee shall have quiet possession of the said Lands, free from all incumbrances; And That the said Mortgagor will execute such further assurances of the said Lands as may be requisite; And That the said Mortgagor hath done no act to encumber the said Lands; And That the said Mortgagor will Insure the Buildings on the said Lands to the amount of not less than currency; And That the said Mortgagor doth release to the said Mortgagee all his claim upon the said Lands, subject to the said proviso.
Provided, that the Mortgagee on default of payment for one month may, on giving ten days public notice enter upon and lease or sell the said Lands. Provided, that in default of the payment of the Interest hereby secured, the Principal hereby secured shall become payable; Provided, that until default of payment the Mortgagor shall have quiet possession of the said Lands.
And the said Catherine McLean Wife of the said Mortgagor, hereby bars her Dower in the said Lands.

(1 ) That my name, place of residence and addition, occupation or calling are above truly set forth in full.
(2) That I know the within named Alexander Mclean and Catherine McLean
(3) That I was present and saw them execute the within Mortgage and duplicate original thereof at the Town of Almonte in the said County of Lanark
(4) And that I am a subscribing witness to the said Mortgage and duplicate original thereof.
