Letter from Andrew Bell to Bennet Rosamond. In the letter, Bell explains the details of the dam that Bennet had proposed to be built. The first page is calculations of the power of the dam.

Volume of Mississippi River at Almonte 190 c’ft per second = 11,400 c’ft per minute at 10 ft head = 11,400 x 62 ½ x 10 / 33,000 = 216 horse power - of which 75% could be counted upon = 162 horse power

My dear Bennet
The exact difference of level between the surface of the water above the rapid at “Brown’s Clearing” and the surface of water below rapid below old dam is 8.40 feet - you may be able to stand a raise of 1.60 at no 1 mill - but we will look carefully into this - which would give 10 ft fall - You got a memo of what power that would give with the flow of the river as we found it on Friday - Then the water was extremely low - lower than it ever is except about once every 15 or 20 years- ordinary low water ought to give about 500 H.P. I am going to Westport tomorrow morning - When I come back I will give you a sketch &c - of best position to put a new dam - & quantity of timber required &c-
