Pine la always alive. It is a soft wood and as such, when used to build furniture, will exhibit the characteristics of soft wood. It can be bruised and dented, and as the moisture content changes, it will "move". A pine table top for example will not maintain as flat a surface as would a table constructed of glass, plywood, hardwood or arborise. A parson considering an investment in pine should be aware of this.
Over the years, Pinecraft reproductions will develop the marks and
irregularities that give Canadian pine antiques their distinctive character.
With care and waxing, pine furniture will acquire a rich mellow sheen and the natural distress marks produced by living, will not In any way detract from the beauty and value of the furniture. It Is suggested that In Eastern Canada pine furniture be given a thin coat of paste wax every 4 to 6 weeks. In Western Canada where homes tend to be somewhat drier, a thin coat of paste wax applied every 2 to 3 weeks, will help maintain the moisture content of the wood and prevent undue drying. A humidifier in the home is recommended.
Having considered these facts, one may look forward to many years of living with pine furniture, knowing that the pieces one chooses will mellow and become more distinctive and individual.
