Transcription notes:
Overshot Coverlet c. 1860
Ref. Keep Me Warm One Night, Burnhams #282
Unidentified weaver
Found in Toronto
Quebec or Eastern Ont.
Nine Roses (Nine Stars) pat.
The use of medium and light yellow wool in coverlets is not often seen in Ontario
coverlets. It is however more common in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. A few have
been seen in eastern Ontario counties. Some excellent colourful examples found here.
The result of the colour here is dramatic with the use of bands of yellow, red and indigo
blue, all carefully co-ordinated with the changing motifs of the Nine Roses pattern. The
overall coverlet [illegible - could be ‘field’] is carefully planned to result in reduced blocks
at the edges (all sides) to suggest a border motif.
The Nine Roses (aka Nine Stars) pattern was popular for weavers in the Maritimes,
Quebec and Ontario. A variation of the same pattern is also used in several early quilts
made of patches of fabric.
The coverlet is expertly woven with soft hand spun wool on a natural white cotton
warp/[illegible]. Well seamed with a finely knotted bottom fringe.
Condition: Excellent. Minor surface wear. Very minor loss to bottom fringe.
Source: Toronto Antique Show c. 1980. Dealer unrecorded but certainly related to
KMWON – Burnham #282.
