To Joseph Jamieson, Q. C.,
Junior Judge of the County Court of the County of Wellington, and Local Judge of the High Court of Justice :
WE, THE CITIZENS of Almonte and vicinity, embrace the opportunity which your removal from our midst affords to testify to the high esteem in which you are held by us. We beg to assure you that during your residence of more than a quarter of a century amongst us, by your fidelity to every trust and your conspicuous honesty in every relationship of life, you have won the absolute trust of all classes of the community, without distinction of political party, creed or nationality.
We have observed with pleasure your well-earned advancement in public life, from being a Councillor of the Municipality of Ramsay, through the intermediate steps until you reached the highest position in the gift of an admiring people - a seat in the House of Commons as their representative at the Capital of this great Dominion of Canada. While regretting your loss in that capacity, we rejoice that the Government of the day has recognized your distinguished legal abilities and attainments, your perfect urbanity and eminently judicial spirit, and have constituted you the representative and administrator of justice in one of the most important counties in this fair Province of Ontario.
We desire to express to you our appreciation and thankfulness for the active interest you have always taken in the welfare and advancement of this part of the Province, and we recognize in you one who took a very prominent and influential part in securing for Almonte the status and position of a town.
The moral elevation of the community has commanded your best thought and untiring energy, and we feel that much of the enviable fame of Almonte is due to your far extended and exalted reputation.
The temperance cause especially has elicited your enthusiastic support. The consistency and earnestness which have marked your career, whether as a private citizen or fighting in your place in the House of Commons for what you believed would tend to the moral and material benefit of the country at large, will be to us an inspiring memory.
We do not wish that our appreciation should end in words. We beg of you therefore to accept this Watch as a reminder of the time you have spent with us, and this Tea Service to recall our gratitude for the services you have so freely and ungrudgingly rendered us.
While regretting your departure from us, we will follow your career with the interest of friendship ; and be assured that Mrs. Jamieson, your family and yourself will ever have our sincere wishes for your happiness and prosperity.
Signed on behalf of the citizens.
W. THOBURN,
W. P. McEWEN,
