Scope and Content

Object is a rectangular paper Quit Claim Deed between William Barnett and John McIntosh, witnessed by Robert Patterson. There is a blue stamp on the back of the document identifying is as having been registered at the Registry Office for the North Riding of the County of Lanark. The object is dated November 24th 1876. There is a seal on the front of the document. The paper itself is machine woven, with a watermark that reads "BOYD BROOK MILL". The media is black and red ink in the form of printed and handwritten text which covers approximately 60% of the surface of the paper. The object is 33.5cm long and 20.5cm wide. Transcription of artifact is as follows: This Indenture made the twenty fourth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy six BETWEEN William. B. E. Barnett, of the village of Almonte in the county of lanark and Province of Ontario, manufacturer of the First Part, [“Of the same place, wife of the said party of the first part, of the Second part,” is crossed out] and John McIntosh of the Township of Ramsay in the county of Lanark aforesaid, Yeoman of the Second [“third” is crossed out] Part ; Witnesseth, that the said party of the first part, in consideration of the sum of one hundred and forty four dollars of lawful money of Canada, to him in hand paid at or before the ensealing and delivery hereof (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged) hath granted, bargained, sold, and quit-claimed, and by these presents doth grant, bargain, sell and quit-claim unto the said party of the second [“third” is crossed out] part, and his heirs and assigns forever, all his right, title, interest, claim, property, estate and demand, both at law and in equity, and as well in possession as in expectancy, of, in, and to all those certain parcels or tracts of land and premises, situate, lying and being in the village of Almonte in the County of Lanark and Province of Ontario, [“containing by admeasurement be the same more or less ;” is crossed out] and being composed of village lots numbers twenty six twenty seven thirty seven and thirty eight on Stephen Street twenty three twenty four and twenty five on Union Street and thirty nine forty and forty one on Mitcheson Street all in the Rosamond Section of the said village of Almonte. To Have and to Hold the same, with all and singular the hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging, unto the said party of the second [“third” is crossed out] part, and his heirs and assigns forever, in as full, large and ample a manner as the said party of the first part might have held the same had the said Indenture never been executed. [“And this Indenture further Witnesseth, that the said party of the second part, in consideration of the sum of FIVE SHILLINGS, to her in hand paid by the said party of the third part, hath granted and released, and by these presents doth grant and release unto the said party of the third part, and heirs and assigns, all her right and title to DOWER which, in the event of surviving her said husband, she might or would have in, to, or out of the lands and premises hereby conveyed or intended so to be.” is crossed out] I testimony whereof, the parties to these presents have hereunto set their Hands and Seals the day and year first above written. That I know the within named Wm E. Barnett and was present and saw him execute the within Deed and duplicate thereof at the village of Almonte in the County of Lanark, and that I am a subscribing witness to the execution thereof.
