Description

Dennis Mills 2024 donation coverlet #42 Transcription notes: Overshot Coverlet c. 1860 Ref. Keep Me Warm One Night Burnham #258-262 Unidentified weaver Collins Bay, Frontenac County. “Monmouth” pattern Poss. Colebrook weaver? The generous blue wool woven into this overshot coverlet suggests a date after 1860 when wool was in more plentiful availability. The result is a heavy and warm result. The woolen weft is woven with a bleached warp in doubles. The draft pattern by the weaver is known in Ontario as “Monmouth” derived “from the Duke of Monmouth, son of Charles II of England, who was beheaded following his unsuccessful rebellion against his uncle James II in 1685” Burnham. He was long remembered in Scotland and assigned to Scottish weaving in this draft. Of course, many Scots came to Canada and the weavers continued to use the name for their coverlets here. The coverlets in this pattern are known throughout Ontario and beyond. The ROM has five coverlets in this pattern from different weavers of the 19 th c. in different colours and subtle variations. The coverlet was collected in Lennox & Addington from a shop in Camden East and had been purchased in nearby Collins Bay in Frontenac County. A local weaver known as the “Colebrook weaver” used this pattern so it could be linked to his production. Other works by him are in the collection. Condition: Very good – well-seamed – long fringe still intact. Some surface staining at the bottom edge. Invisible centre seam. Source: Camden East shop c. 2017 – originally found in Collins Bay Collection – possible local but many known Ont. examples. Dimensions: 83” (211 cm) l. not including long fringe x 58” (147 cm) w.
