“Dog Tracks” pattern
Poss. Peter Fretz
This is another beautifully woven coverlet found in Lennox & Addington County. The
example in the ROM #297 was found in [illegible] Township in Prince Edward County.
Possibly both excellent examples were woven by the same weaver. Peter Fretz, a
weaver living just north of Nappanee, was regarded as an excellent weaver with
examples in the ROM collection. No other proof rather than proximity to Strathcona
where this piece was in a local collection ([illegible]). The border on the two are
different.
The coverlet uses olive green and cadmium red wool on a natural cotton warp. The star
motifs alternate with a change of colour in each row. The central field switches to a
contrasting border on each side. The pattern name “Dog Tracks” was used by the
Burnhams in KMWON #297 but it is not recorded in old sources (Abercromie).
Condition: Good – unfortunately it has a loss to the right front side border. Otherwise it
is excellent.
Source: Purchased 22-11-13 $56.50 at the [illegible] contents sale in Nappanee. “On
Your Behalf” sale coordinator confirmed later that it had come from the [illegible]
collection in nearby Strathcona. [illegible] was related to an early UEL family called
[illegible] in the village of Strathcona very close to Peter Fretz a 19 th weaver documented
as a maker of coverlets.
