Description

“Five Colours of the Universe: Symbolism in clothes and fabrics of the Ch’ing Dynasty (1644-1911)” Author: John E. Vollmer, 1980. Owned by Dorothy Burnham, whose illustrations are featured in the book (see third image for acknowledgment, and fourth image for an example of some of her drawings). On the sixth page of the book, the author [Vollmer- also a close friend of the Burnhams] has handwritten: “Dorothy- For many patient hours spent listening to me ramble on about things Chinese. Many thanks John” John Vollmer (author) worked at Edmonton Art Gallery, which hosted Dorothy’s “Under the Lilies” exhibit; they were coworkers/friends during her time in Alberta in the late 1980s. This was likely gifted to Dorothy when the exhibit finished it's time in Edmonton.
