Description

"Studies in Textile History" Edited by Veronika Gevers, 1977. Published by the Royal Ontario Museum. This book was gifted to Dorothy Burnhan by her Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) coworkers, as a tribute to her husband's (Harold B. Burnham) life and work. Written by the Burnhams' coworkers, the articles concern ROM artifacts and features a biography of Harold Burnham, discussing his life's work. This book is the only artifact in the Dorothy Burnham Collection with a biography/picture of Harold, as he rarely appears in their travel photos. Harold Bostwick Burnham (1911-1973) was the son of Harold Burnham (Sr.) and Florence Burnham (nee Manson). He was the husband of Dorothy Kate Burnham (nee Macdonald) (1911-2004) (married in 1944), and the father of Mark Burnham, and James "Jim" Burnham. Originally a banker, he became a expert weaver, working alongside his wife and exploring diverse textiles and cultures. He and his wife, Dorothy, made an enormous impact on Canadian museums and the preservation of Canadian textile traditions. Some of their research spanned over 3 decades. Both Harold and Dorothy had extensive and successful careers as Curator for the ROM's textile department. Many of the textiles and coverlets in this collection were woven by the Burnhams. Harold was laid to rest in a coverlet he had woven with his wife.
