Dennis Mills 2024 donation coverlet #38 Transcription notes: Coverlet Overshot c. 1850-60 Ref. Keep Me Warm One Night, Burnhams #271 Unidentified weaver Poss. Leeds County or Frontenac Co. “Monmouth” variation This hand woven overshot coverlet uses modest amounts of indigo blue wool for the weft on a natural white cotton warp. The variation of the popular “Monmouth” pattern has extended tables creating a strong contrast before transitioning to the lozenges. A dazzling impact is the result. It identical to an example in the Royal Ontario Museum #271 KMWON – Burnhams. The surface aging suggests my example is somewhat earlier 1850→. Burnhams have analyzed the specific variations found here as well. The coverlet here was collected about 2007 at the Cabin Fever Antique show in Kingston [illegible] from Eastern Ontario – name not recorded. It is most certainly related to the published Leeds County example. It has a bottom fringe and two attached side fringes. The centre seaming is in keeping with an experienced weaver. Condition: Good – a 4-inch loss to the bottom edge and fringe. Two wear spots – top [illegible] and one old small stain. Source: Cabin Fever c. 2007 – Kingston, Eastern Ontario dealer. [illegible] (Silverbrook Antiques) – poss. Leatherland family [illegible]. Dimensions: 81” (206 cm) inc. fringe l. x 66 ½” (169 cm) w. incl. fringe This variation of “Monmouth” is quite rare & unusual.
