Description

Dennis Mills 2024 donation coverlet #23 Transcription notes: Overshot Coverlet 1840-60 Ref. Keep Me Warm One Night, Burnhams #295 Unknown weaver Poss. [illegible but probably 'unamed' weaver Camden Township, Lennox & Addington Co. “Freemason’s Coat of Arms” draft variation This is another very attractive piece of handwoven coverlet. It is expertly woven using a variation of “The Freemason’s Coat of Arms”. The coverlet uses dark pink and black wool for the weft on a natural cotton warp. Pink is an unusual colour to appear in early coverlets. If a natural dye recipe was not used, it may be a commercial dye, suggesting a later date. The coverlet was purchased in Lennox and Addington County in the town of Napanee, suggesting a possible link to the nearby unknown [illegible but could be Colebrook] weaver from Camden Township. This is supported by an example woven by them in the ROM - #295 (KMWON) in the collection of Canadian Museum of History D5326. “The extra block on the outside of the ‘star’ motif is part of the framing of the table” Burnham. The “stars” in this case have been extended and with the black wool appear more as blocks (two thread blocks). The variations in this example are a strong link to the CM of Hist and 2 ROM examples – not just a coincidence. The coverlet has “EA” initials stitched into the bottom right back – probably the first owner. No known weavers in L&A County have these links. Condition: Excellent – no evidence of regular use. The centre seam is carefully matched and stitched. Source: Lamberts Auctions, Napanee 2008. Possible link to the [illegible but looks like Mills or Miles] & Van de Bogart families early L&A. Dimensions: 85 ½” (217 cm) x 66” (168 cm) w. Overall a very special and rare example.
