Fulling Ball
Made by Huyck Canada
This was a test used to establish a shrinkage number for each type of wool. A standard weight of a wool sample was wet up in a standard fulling soap medal and then tumbled in a stainless steel cube for a standard length of time. On removing the sample, it would now look like this ball. This ball was now measured and the smaller the ball the better the shrinkage properties the wool had. After many tests on all of the different wools used in the plant a shrinkage number could be established for each wool type. This information was then used to compare different wools to one another and as a quality control check on repeat shipments of the same wool type. Depending on the end use of the wool it was very important to know how each wool type would shrink during processing.Collection
