“Freemason’s Felicity” pattern – variation
This is quite a beautiful, heavy and expertly woven coverlet using dark indigo blue weft
wool and a bleach white cotton warp. The two panels are well joined with a centre
seam. It uses generous amounts of wool on doubled cotton resulting in a sturdy and
heavy (thickness and weight) result.
The coverlet is very similar to an example in the ROM (Burnham – KMWON) #327. The
centre table variations of “Freemason’s Felicity” results in losses to the completion of
the corner (chariot) wheels. The central motifs also result in strong contrasting crosses.
No side or top/bottom motifs have been used – allowing the central field to extend to all
edges. The ROM example was found in Leeds County and this example was found in
Belleville (at auction), Hastings County.
Dating is always a challenge, although the coverlet has evidence of [illegible but
perhaps ‘careful’] wear over time I think due to weight and construction it is likely the
third quarter of the 19 th c.
Condition: Good. Very little wear. Old repairs to blue wool – top edges.
