Description

Pair of traditional Chinese women's platform shoes, featuring navy blue silk uppers richly embroidered with colorful floral sprays and delicate butterflies in shades of blue, peach, coral, ivory, and green. The rounded toes are accented with decorative embroidered bands, while pale gold braided trim outlines the openings. Small fabric tabs extend from the heels. The uppers rest on distinctive, tall, ivory-colored fabric-covered platforms with narrow waists and broad, flared bases, characteristic of Manchu women's elevated footwear during the Qing Dynasty. Known as flowerpot shoes (huapen di xie), this style of footwear was traditionally worn by Manchu women, particularly those of the upper classes, as part of formal and ceremonial dress. The elevated platforms created a graceful, distinctive gait while allowing the wearer to display the elaborate embroidery of her garments. The floral and butterfly motifs symbolize beauty, happiness, and good fortune. Period: Likely La
