Description

Chinese aristocratic rank badge (buzi), circa 1850, traditionally worn on the front of a duke's court robe. The rectangular silk panel features a five-clawed golden dragon with an elaborate mane and outstretched limbs, surrounded by stylized clouds, auspicious symbols, and decorative floral motifs against a dark ground. The dragon appears above turbulent waves and diagonal bands representing water, executed in metallic gold and silver threads with subtle colored silk accents. A vertical center opening accommodates the front fastening of the robe. Finished with an ornamental border featuring longevity symbols and mounted in a black frame for display.
