134 ChineseDescription
Pair of Chinese military rank badges (buzi), circa 1870, embroidered in fine Pekin knot stitch on a shimmering copper-thread ground. Each badge depicts a stylized bear, the insignia of a fifth-rank military official, standing upon a rocky outcrop above turbulent waves. The central figure is surrounded by densely worked blue and white cloud scrolls, auspicious symbols, and a red sun disc. The intricate embroidery incorporates shades of indigo, pale blue, cream, rust, and gold, with a geometric border framing the composition. The front badge features a vertical center opening to accommodate the fastening of the official's robe. Mounted and framed for display.Acquisition
