Description

Pair of Chinese censor rank badges (buzi), circa 1750, featuring the mythical xiezhi, a horned, lion-like creature traditionally associated with justice and the imperial censorate. The animal is depicted standing upon a rocky outcrop, with a white body, rust-colored markings, flowing blue mane, and raised tail. The composition is surrounded by stylized clouds, flowering branches, pine trees, and a red sun disc against a dark silk ground. Elaborate rock formations and waves occupy the lower portion, embroidered in shades of blue, cream, sage green, rust, and gold. The front badge is divided vertically to accommodate the fastening of a court robe. Mounted and framed for display.
