Chinese civil rank badge (buzi), 19th century, executed in finely woven silk tapestry using the kossu (kesi) technique. The badge features a flycatcher, insignia of a ninth-rank civil official during the Qing Dynasty, depicted with outstretched wings and long tail feathers above stylized waves and rocky formations. The bird is surrounded by densely patterned blue cloud scrolls, flowering branches, auspicious symbols, and a red sun disc against a dark ground embellished with gold-toned detailing. Multicolored diagonal bands representing water occupy the lower portion, while a decorative floral and scrolling border frames the composition.Acquisition
