Description

Chinese military rank badges (buzi), mid-19th century, featuring the tiger, insignia of a fourth-rank military official during the Qing Dynasty. Each badge depicts a seated tiger with distinctive black stripes, raised tail, and open mouth, positioned upon a rocky outcrop above stylized waves. The tiger is surrounded by densely embroidered blue cloud scrolls, auspicious symbols, and a red sun disc against a shimmering gold-toned ground. The lower portion features turbulent waves and diagonal bands in shades of indigo, cream, and pale blue, enclosed by a geometric fretwork border. The front badge is divided vertically to accommodate the fastening of an official's robe. Executed in richly detailed silk embroidery with metallic thread accents.
