Description

Chinese military rank badge (buzi), circa 1730, featuring the mythical ch'i-lin (qilin), insignia of a first-rank military official, worn by the wife of an official of corresponding rank. The creature is depicted with a blue-scaled body, horned head, open mouth, and flowing mane and tail, standing upon a dark rocky outcrop above stylized waves. Executed in silk embroidery against a shimmering gold-toned ground, the composition is accented by blue, green, and coral-colored cloud motifs and a red sun disc. The lower portion features boldly embroidered waves in shades of indigo, pale blue, cream, and green, enclosed by a narrow gold border.
