Description

Chinese civil rank badge (buzi), circa 1880, executed in finely woven silk tapestry using the kossu (kesi) technique. The badge features a wild goose, insignia of a fourth-rank civil official during the Qing Dynasty, depicted with outstretched wings and an elongated neck above stylized waves and rocky formations. The bird is rendered in cream and pale gold against a dark ground densely patterned with blue cloud scrolls, flowering branches, auspicious symbols, and a red sun disc. The lower portion features turbulent waves and diagonal bands in shades of indigo, pale blue, and cream, enclosed by a geometric fretwork border. The vertical center opening indicates its placement on the front of an official's court robe.
