Original blue cloth-covered fitted hat box made to house the c. 1880 Chinese Mandarin’s summer court hat (chaoguan). Of domed circular form with a tall cylindrical central compartment and projecting side fitting, the box is covered throughout in blue textile and retains its original fitted construction. The top is impressed with the auspicious shou (longevity) symbol. Made specifically for the accompanying fourth-rank red silk floss summer court hat, helping preserve the hat in excellent condition.
