068 ChineseDescription
A group of traditional Chinese official's hat knobs, or finials, comprising examples in translucent red, coral-colored, pink, and cobalt-blue glass. Each features a polished spherical or ovoid glass ornament mounted on an elaborately worked gilt-metal base, decorated with raised beading, floral motifs, and intricate openwork. The finials vary in size, shape, and construction, with one example mounted on a slender metal stem.
The red and coral-colored examples are associated with first- and second-rank Qing Dynasty officials, respectively, while blue glass was used for other official ranks. These ornamental hat buttons were worn atop the formal court hats of imperial Chinese officials, with their color and material serving as visible indicators of rank and status. The group illustrates the elaborate metalwork and decorative craftsmanship characteristic of Qing Dynasty court accessories.Acquisition
