070 ChineseDescription
An elaborately carved Chinese ivory visiting card case of rectangular form, featuring exceptionally intricate, high-relief and openwork decoration depicting a bustling garden landscape populated with numerous figures, traditional pavilions, bridges, and lush foliage. The densely layered composition includes finely detailed architectural structures, flowering trees, and figures engaged in everyday activities, creating a richly textured, continuous narrative across the surface. The fitted lid is seamlessly incorporated into the overall design, with the carved decoration extending across the joint. The ivory exhibits a warm, creamy patina consistent with age.
Such finely carved card cases were produced primarily in Canton (Guangzhou) during the 19th century for the Western export market, where they were prized as luxurious accessories for storing visiting cards.Location
