085 ChineseDescription
An exquisite Chinese export lady's parasol, crafted in Canton circa 1840 for the Western market. The domed canopy is fashioned from pale blue silk, lavishly embroidered with flowering vines, peonies, blossoms, and scrolling foliage in delicate shades of pink, coral, burgundy, green, and ivory. The scalloped perimeter is finished with a generous multicolored silk fringe in alternating bands of cream, salmon, forest green, and deep blue. The parasol is surmounted by a finely carved ivory figural finial and supported by an intricately pierced ivory shaft terminating in an elegant curved handle.
Produced during the height of the China Trade, such luxurious parasols were fashionable accessories among affluent European and American women, prized for their exotic materials, elaborate needlework, and exceptional craftsmanship.Acquisition
