Scope and Content

The Al Sari Collection includes a scrapbook of materials from Fishangri-la, a fisherman's complex located at the former U.S. Navy Torpedo Testing station in Montauk. The scrapbook includes black-and-white photographs, brochures, promotional materials, press releases, newspaper clippings, and ephemera. Ephemera includes business cards from charter captains and rates for party boats. The materials in the scrapbook date from 1950 to 1963. The collection also includes 12 black-and-white photographs of the 1963 St. Patrick's Day Parade in Montauk.

Excerpt from Press Release in collection dated January 24, 1950: SPORT FISHING PARADISE TO BE CREATED AT MONTAUK FISHANGI-LA, a model sports fishing set-up, will be created at Montauk Point, Long Island, this spring. Goble Aircraft Specialties, Inc. of Mineola, Long Island, has purchased the former Navy Torpedo Testing Station at Montauk with its extensive docks, warehouses, barracks, etc., and has already begin its transformation into a fisherman's paradise. There will be docking space for 100 party and charter fishing boats....a fine seafood restaurant.... an automotive gas station....tackle shop....baits shop....a recreation hall featuring a cocktail lounge and grill....hotel and private cottage accommodations for an excess of 300 people.
