Description

Lithograph print of the "Lathrop Brown windmill house" located on the cliffs just west of the Montauk Point Lighthouse. The print is by Commander Hampton Ericsson (1901-1968), who served as U.S. Navy Commander during World War II. The windmill was built in Southampton in 1813. In 1912, it became the Wainscott Public Library. Lathrop Brown purchased the windmill in 1922 and moved it to Montauk. In January 1942, the Army took over 468 acres next to the Montauk Lighthouse to create a coastal defense station. The windmill and house were used by the government as part of the war effort. The windmill was later purchased by G. Pierson and moved to the Georgica Association.
