Note

"Kathryn Abbe received a BFA degree in art from Pratt Institute and studied painting with Yasuo Kunyoshi at the New School. She began her career in photography, first working as assistant to Vogue photographer, Toni Frissell, for two years. In the mid-1940s she became a freelance photographer for magazines here and abroad. In 1946, she married James Abbe, who was also a photographer. They shared three studios in Manhattan. Her work has been published in House & Garden, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Paris Match, and includes covers for Better Homes & Gardens and Parents. Her photographs have appeared in many museum exhibitions: The International Center for Photography, the Metropolitan Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. On Long Island her photographs have been shown at Suffolk County Museum, Post College and Guild Hall in East Hampton, In 1976, she produced a sound and slideshow for Guild Hall's Bicentennial Celebration. This was titled (coincidentally) "On Montauk." In 1994, she was profiled in The History of Women Photographers which documented women from the mid-1800s to the present. Later exhibits which included her work were held at the New York Public Library, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Akron Museum of Art." - Kathryn Abbe, December 1999.
