Dean Phillippe was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. Rather than wait to be drafted, he enlisted in the Air Force and was assigned to the 773rd Radar Squadron at Montauk, New York, where he held a secret clearance and worked as a cook. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was temporarily reassigned to guard duty at the base gate. It was during his final year of service that he met his future wife, Paulette Perrault, whose father was the first director of mental health for Suffolk County. After a brief return to Missouri, Dean and Paulette moved back to Montauk. He was hired by the Suffolk County Parks Department in 1967, initially working at Cedar Point Park for approximately seven years before being assigned to Montauk County Park. There, he developed hiking trails, conducted research on Montaukett Indian history, and helped establish an Indian museum. He later moved into Third House, a historic property within the park, and became a dedicated researcher of both the park's history and the Montaukett Indians.Oral History Details
