The George Nama Collection consists of clippings, illustrations, and maps relating to Montauk and the East End of Long Island. The materials in the collection date from 1869 to 1969, with a bulk of the material from 1898 to 1928. Nama collected newspaper and magazine articles covering Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders at Camp Wikoff, Montauk, New York from 1898 to 1899. Leslie's Weekly, Harper's Weekly, and The Island repeatedly reported on the camp and included weekly photographs and illustrations illuminating life inside the camp for soldiers, nurses, and doctors. Additional illustrations include book plates and advertisements depicting surf fishing, the Menhaden Fishery, hunting, real estate, and recreational life on Long Island with a focus on Montauk Point.Archive Details
