The Margaret “Peggy” Flannery Joyce Photographs and Papers collection consists of slides, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, programs, and ephemera relating to Peggy’s career as a teacher at the Montauk School and former president of the Montauk Historical Society. Over 400 untitled and undated slides document people and places in Montauk. Places include the Montauk Point Lighthouse, Lake Montauk Inlet, the ocean and bay shorelines, the train station, Fort Pond Bay, Montauk Elementary School, the Surf Club, churches, the airport, and the Montauk Fire Department, among others. People represented in the slides include students, fishermen, Montauk Historical Society members, and members of the Joyce family. Newspapers and clippings cover events relating to Montauk, the Montauk School, and the historical society. Photographs include class photographs, individual student photos, and student ID cards from 1967-1974. Papers include correspondence, letters from students, student writing, newsletters, and Montauk School programs for plays and performances.Archive Details

Margaret “Peggy” Flannery Joyce was born in East Hampton in 1921. After graduating from East Hampton High School, she attended State University at New Paltz Teacher College and Southampton College, earning degrees in education. She began her teaching career in 1942 and remained a teacher into the 1990s. Peggy was a charter member of the Montauk Historical Society and worked as president for 20 years until her death in 2002. She managed the Second House Museum and organized the annual craft fairs there. She was also a prime figure in having the Montauk Historical Society take over the management of the Montauk Point Lighthouse.
