Pre-Civil War seraphine (pressure reed organ) manufactured by G.H. Nichols of Montpelier, Vermont.Context
This seraphine was part of the household goods of the donor's aunt Marjorie Freethey Teachout's second husband, William Teachout, who was originally from Vermont. The seraphine came from William Teachout's first wife's family, neé Temple, who lived in Montpelier, Vermont. The instrument was brought to the Freethey family home on Harriman Point, Brooklin, Maine, when Marjorie and William married in 1960, and where they spent summers after retirement.
William Teachout married Elizabeth Dewey Temple of 13 Loomis Street, Montpelier, on June 15, 1922. Elizabeth was the daughter of Alfred H. Temple, a dry goods merchant in Montpelier. According to her obituary, "Mrs. Teachout studied music under private tutors in New York City and was an accomplished pianist."Acquisition
