17 clothespins produced by the National Clothespin Company, Montpelier, Vt., 2003Context
These 17 clothespins with 8 custom imprints were produced to commemorate the closing of the National Clothespin Company in Montpelier, Vt., in 2003. Each clothespin has the word "Vermont" imprinted on it, either vertically or horizontally, with an additional small picture at the clip's end. The 8 designs include an apple, hummingbird, moose, cross-country skier, duck, barn, covered bridge, and sugar shack.
The National Clothespin Company was founded in 1909 as the National Spring Clip Company by Allen D. Moore, an employee of the U.S. Clothespin company who had refined the metal springs on clothespins, creating a more cost efficient and wind-safe product. The factory was originally located at One Main Street, in Montpelier, and the initially employed twenty workers. In 1918, the company moved to One Granite Street, a building that still stands today (December 2023)
The National Clothespin Company was the last remaining factory in the United States manufacturing clothespins when it filled its last orders in November 2003. Janet and Peter Merrill were the last owners of the company.
