Brass number plate in the shape of a shield inscribed "Boutwell 156" mounted on wooden block of same shape.Context
James M. Boutwell owned the house at 156 Main Street, Montpelier, Vermont, from 1899 until he died in 1929. His widow, Jennie (Genevieve) Rumsey (1857-1943), sold the house to the local Masonic Lodge in 1950. The lodge sold it to Bernard Neill, who moved the house across land to 14 Franklin Street. Bernard Neill was the father of Lewis Neill, Maudean Neill's husband. In 2023 when the Neills were selling their house they gave the house number, three copy photographs of the house in its original location, and one photograph of the house being moved to the Montpelier Vermont Historical Society.Acquisition
