Organization Description

Cross Bakery, producers of Montpelier Crackers, was a fixture on Main Street for more than 130 years, occupying a first a brick building where the Bethany Church stands today and then a wood frame building where the AT&T store is in City Center today. Timothy Cross started the bakery in 1828 but his brother, Charles H. Cross, developed the recipe for common crackers and made them famous across New England. At its height, the company did $6 million worth of business annually and had 160 employees. The company was sold to George L. Edson in 1916 and was operated in Montpelier by his son G. Landale Edson until 1959. The building was demolished in 1984 to make way for City Center.
