Organization Description

William Miller operated Miller’s Inn from 1883 to 1915 at 118 Main Street, where Hugo’s was most recently located. The complex had a hotel, saloon, restaurant, livery stable and bottling plant where Miller bottled both liquors and sodas. A Vermont prohibition law got him in trouble in 1892, along with other local saloon owners. Miller was arrested, jailed and sent to prison for one-year hard labor. He served his sentence, returned to Montpelier and resumed his business, producing ginger ale, sarsaparilla, birch beer, Ottawa root beer, raspberry soda, club soda and tonic water. After his death in 1915 the business passed through several owners until the Sykas family opened the Lobster Pot Restaurant in the inn’s location in approximately 1947. The name "Miller's Inn" seems to have been used as late as 1960 in advertisements for rooms for rent.
