Lester H. Greene was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on October 26, 1863. He grew up in Swanton, Vermont, and worked briefly there and in St. Johnsbury. He came to Montpelier from Swanton in 1882 and found employment as a pharmacist for five years, after which he purchased Bascomb’s Drug Store. In September 1898 he formed a company to produce “Greene’s Warranted Syrup of Tar," a cough remedy that contained alcohol, chloroform and heroin. He married Nell E. Gates in 1884 and Ida B. Pickering in 1902.
