"Adoration of the Shepherds"
The shepherds have entered the stable where Jesus has been born; his mother, Mary, cradles him with one arm. Joseph is at the rear. Some of the shepherds are kneeling; one holds a lamb. On the right the largest angel, swathed in red, points to the baby Jesus with his right hand and to the heavens with his left.
This is one of three paintings Haidt initialed. Note the "VH" on the dog's collar in the lower left corner.
The painting illustrates the bible passage, "And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told to them" Luke 2:20
This is one of six paintings Haidt made dealing with the death and resurrection of Christ, for the Saal in the Manor House in Nazareth. MHS has all six in the collection, " Christ in Gethsemane", "Christ Scourged", "The Crucifixion", "Lamentation over the Body of Christ", and "Thomas Doubting".
The Moravian Church in Lititz has two smaller versions of this biblical scene also painted by Haidt.Acquisition
