"Christ in Gethsemane" or "Jesus in Gethsemane"
Illustrates the Bible passage, "Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. In his anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground." Luke 22:43-44.
The night before the crucifixion, Jesus is in the garden of Gethsemane, praying and sweating blood. Two angels minister to him, while the three disciples who accompany him sleep in the distance. One angel supports the reclining Jesus, another angel hovers over him swathed in red cloth.
This is one of six paintings Haidt made dealing with the death and resurrection of Christ, for the Saal in the Manor House in Nazareth. MHS has all six in the collection, "Adoration of the Shepherds", "Christ Scourged", "The Crucifixion", "Lamentation over the Body of Christ", and "Thomas Doubting".
Catalogue entry from 1982 Moravian College exhibition curated by Charlene Engel:
"Most exceptional for Haidt's graphic portrayals of the "bloody sweat" which covers Christ's body during his hours in Gethsemane, this painting demonstrates Haidt's vivid use of color and his ability to produce powerful figural compositions...The face of the angle at the right is one of Haidt's most beautiful."Acquisition
