Description

"Lamentation over Christ" Illustrates the Bible passage, "Joseph of Arimathea...took courage and went to Pilate, and he asked for the body of Jesus. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph" Mark 15:43,45 Excerpt from 1972 Berkeley University Art Museum catalog entry by Jane Dillenberger: "In this painting, the wounded body of Christ is given maximum exposure. The wound in Christ's side is traditionally portrayed on the right side of his torso, whereas Haidt consistently placed it on the left...The weeping Magdalene in the foreground is enormous in contrast to Mary who supports Christ's arm. These strange disjunctions of space and size combine with the insistent crescent of the massive body of Christ, lending expressive power to the painting."
