Built in 1899 by the Chicago Ship Building Company, Chicago, Illinois for the Northern Michigan Transportation Company, and was valued at $240,000 when built. The ILLINOIS was a heavy steel, combination freight and passenger steamer built for service on Lake Michigan. When designing the vessel, special emphasis was placed on her bow and hull construction, so as to equip her for cross-lake winter service, and as a result she enjoyed an excellent reputation as an ice breaker for many years. The vessel served various owners faithfully for forty-five years without any major mishaps and was enjoyed by many on her trips. The steamer lay idle for several years. The ILLINOIS was scrapped at Hamilton, Ontario in October of 1947.Collection
