Context

From the attached 3/1/1958 MJ: "The broad thoroughfare sweeping toward the lake so elegantly on the left is Chestnut st., today Juneau av. East of the river, in the old days, it was Division st. The triangle of land that it passes on the left contains a building still standing, which has become a landmark. This is the homestead of Phillip Best, founder of the Pabst Brewing Co. [...] It is today 810 W. Juneau av. [...] The large white manufacturing plant in the center of the panorama is the establishment of the Brand Stove Co., a concern which sold stoves, in the old coal scuttle and griddle days, all over the northwest under its founder Sebastian Brand [...] On the lake, a little north of the center of the picture, is a tiny indication of St. John's cathedral. The foreground of the lithograph is occupied by Lackner's gardens with its orderly botanical arrangement. The site of Trinity Lutheran church is to the right of the handsome gardens at what was then 9th and Prairie sts., today, 1046 N. 9th st. [...] You will notice that there are plenty of horseback riders and handsome traps. A brewery wagon rumbles along, and a horse drawing a spring wagon is hitched to a post. Boys apparently played in the streets in those days, too. There is just one dog in the picture, trotting along the sidewalk and minding its own business."

Notes

The attached 3/1/1958 MJ which references a gift of another impression of this print to the Milwaukee County Historical Society notes that Theodore Mueller, MCHS curator, "believes that the lithograph, the first of the subject he has ever seen, was made in the 1870's." However, Louis Lipman, the printer of this work, died in 1869, so the work more likely dates to the 1860s.
