Surgeon Erastus Bradley (E.B.) Wolcott (1804-1880) was a prominent Milwaukee citizen and Wisconsin pioneer. Wolcott was a founder or co-founder of important institutions, such as the Wisconsin State Medical Society and Medical Society of Milwaukee County. Like Lydia Ely, the artist of the nearby portrait of Alexander Mitchell, Wolcott was also a key figure in the founding of the Milwaukee Soldiers Home. Wolcott was also a leader of Wisconsin's abolitionist movement and advocate for women in the medical profession. The artist, William Ver Bryck, was a prolific portrait painter of some leading citizens of nineteenth-century Milwaukee. The Milwaukee Public Library holds many resources related to Wolcott, the medical history of Milwaukee and Wisconsin, Wisconsin's role in the Civil War, women's rights in Wisconsin, and more.
